Research Interests
Susan Verghese, MD, is professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the George Washington University Medical Center, and the director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia at the Division of anesthesia at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. She is an internationally recognized expert in ultrasound assisted vascular access in infants and children. Dr. Verghese earned her medical degree at Christian Medical College, Vellore from the University of Madras, India. She joined the staff of Children’s National Medical Center in 1982. After completing a residency in Anesthesia at the Peter Bent Brigham and affiliated hospitals at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts she came to Children’s for a pediatric anesthesia fellowship. Dr. Verghese is well-known national and international speaker and has been a regular speaker at the AHI (American Health Institute) seminars held in the east coast of America. Her lecture topics include ultrasound assisted vascular access, anesthesia for children with CHD for non-cardiac surgery, Newborn surgical emergencies, and cutaneous analgesia. She has been a journal reviewer for Anesthesia and Analgesia, Practical Reviews in Anesthesiology, Audio Reviews Oakstone Medical Publishing, Anesthesiology News, Pediatric Anesthesia, and the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia. In addition, she has been member of the Subcommittee on Pediatric Anesthesia and a reviewer for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting abstract submissions for the last four years. She has published more that 35 articles and 40 abstracts. She has been a lecturer and a teacher at the workshops on ultrasound use in pediatric vascular access in children at the annual international ISURA meetings since 2004. She is the president of the District of Columbia Society of Anesthesia (DCSA) and an alternate delegate to the Annual ASA meeting.
