Research Interests
Nazrat M. Mirza, MD, ScD, is an attending pediatrician in the Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health, Children's National Medical Center, and an assistant professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University. Born in Kenya, she received her medical and pediatric training in Kenya and at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a doctorate in public health from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. Dr. Mirza has broad experience in the area of international maternal and child health and in child health nutrition. Her current clinical and research interests are in the area of pediatric obesity. She coordinated the Children’s National Medical Center multidisciplinary team that developed the obesity clinical management pathways. Dr. Mirza developed a “standard of care” protocol for the treatment of obese Latino children, and is the director of the C.O.O.L. Kids Program, a community based obesity treatment and intervention program for Latino children and adolescents in Washington, DC. Dr. Mirza is also the founder and medical director of the multidisciplinary Obesity Clinic at Children’s. Dr. Mirza was a recipient of the Pediatric Clinical Scholar Award (K12-RR017613), CD Bridge funding, and was recently awarded a K23 grant from NCRR, NIH. She is also a recipient of several grant awards to study childhood obesity, and has published her research in peer-reviewed journals and at national and international meetings. Dr. Mirza has been invited to speak on childhood obesity at several regional and national meetings, and at community leadership meetings.
