Research Interests
Karen Simpson Kuehl, MD, MPH, is a graduate of Swarthmore College and Harvard Medical School and is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. In 1997, she received an MPH from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene with emphasis on epidemiology. Dr. Kuehl is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the International Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease, the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology, and the American Public Health Association. Dr. Kuehl’s research interest is in adverse birth outcomes (cardiac and other birth defects) and environmental factors associated with these. Initially her work used spatial mapping techniques to generate ecologic hypotheses of risk factors associated with cardiac defects. Her current work uses biomarkers of exposure and genetic assessment of susceptibility to oxidative stress to further delineate the relationship of environmental exposures to cardiac defects.
