Study Activities

Jennifer Lerner, Study Coordinator, teaching
NIOX to an AsthMaP®Participant.
All testing is completed in one visit which takes 2-3 hours. Visits are scheduled Monday thru Friday, and are held at Children's National Medical Center at 111 Michigan Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20010.

  • A NIOX machine measures exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) which quantifies levels of inflammation in the lungs. The participant breathes into the machine, and is given visual prompts similar to a video game.
  • A spirometry machine measures the volume and force of each breath, giving a measure of lung function. The goal is for the participant to blow out the virtual candles on a virtual birthday cake.
*Potential Risks / Discomfort: Spirometry can cause coughing or
lightheadedness, but these symptoms will go away shortly after the test
           is finished.
  • Nasal proteins are collected for measurement of inflammation.
  • Hair and urine samples are tested for levels of cotinine, a byproduct of nicotine. This is used to measure the participants' exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke.
  • A blood sample is collected to measure IgE, a protein that measures allergic inflammation, assess white blood cells, and to further investigate genetic markers of asthma.
*Potential Risks / Discomfort: The participant may feel some pain form the
needle stick, as well as bleeding, bruising, and infection of
the skin. Lightheadedness and fainting rarely occur.

The participant may be concerned about the use or storage of their DNA. To
keep the participant's DNA safe and secure, all samples are given a code
number and all identifying information is removed from the sample before it
is sent to the laboratory. Any information that could link the DNA sample to
the participant is kept under lock-and-key.
  • Allergy Skin Prick Testing measures sensitivity to common environmental allergens, such as dogs, cats, and some types of grasses.
*Potential Risks / Discomfort: If the participant has allergies, side effects such
as redness, swelling, and itching of the skin may occur.
  • Participants and their parents are interviewed about the participant's medical history, home environment, and family history related to asthma and allergies.
*Potential Risks / Discomfort: Providing personal information about the way
that asthma affects your body or your child's body may also cause worry
about how this information will be used or may cause you to be
self-conscious or uncomfortable. The participant does not need to answer
any question that makes them uncomfortable.

**AsthMaP® is a research study investigating childhood asthma. Participation is voluntary, and completely confidential. The testing performed is not intended to provide treatment, however some of the test results are very useful for the participant's primary care physician. Test results are only released if the participant gives authorization.**
