Macular Degeneration Research
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic eye disease that gradually destroys tissue in the part of the eye responsible for central vision caused by a buildup of macular deposits called drusen. The macula is the layer of tissue on the inside back wall of the eyeball. Macular degeneration doesn't cause total blindness but leads to a blind spot or blurring. The disease tends to affect adults age 50 and older. Center for Genetic Medicine researchers are investigating how the relationship between genetic factors and the environment causes the disease and determines how it progresses.
