The AsthMaP2 Project

The AsthMaP2® Project is a pediatric asthma research study lead by the Principal Investigator Robert J. Freishtat, MD, MPH.

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease. The observed symptoms - wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath - are a result of an inflammatory response in the airways. Genetic, environmental, and social risk factors for asthma have been established, but an exact cause is unknown. Recurring episodes of breathing problems, known as "asthma attacks," are frightening, disruptive to daily life, and have the potential to be fatal.  In recent years the number of children diagnosed with asthma has dramatically increased. In Washington, DC, more than one in ten children currently has asthma, which is well above the national average. There is a clear need for alternative medical perspectives on the causes and treatment of asthma. AsthMaP stands for Asthma Severity Modifying Polymorphisms and is a research project happening at the Children’s Research Institute’s Center for Genetic Medicine at Children’s National. AsthMaP 2 examines the relationships between asthma and different health factors like genes, vitamin D, allergic sensitivity, and environment. The purpose of this study is to learn about the effect of vitamin D on asthma severity and asthma control. 


In order to participate in the AsthMaP2 study, children must:

  • Be between 6 and 20 years old
  • Have been physician-diagnosed with asthma for at least one year
  • Reside in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia
  • Be free of other significant respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses

Study Activities

The study takes about 12 months to complete. Participation involves the following time commitment:

  • Two in-person visits to the Clinical Research Center at Children’s National (each visit takes about two hours)
  • Three phone interviews

Eligible Participants will be asked to complete study activities during the in-person visits including:

  • Answering questions about you or your child’s asthma, home environment, and medical history
  • Breathing tests
  • Allergen skin test
  • Blood, urine, and nasal cell collections
