Cutting-Edge Technology in the Operating Room

Children’s National Medical Center is committed to providing the safest, most effective ways to treat patients. Technology plays a big part in our commitment to patients and families. Children’s National became the first pediatric hospital in the nation to use a 3-D imaging system in the Operating Room. The Medtronic O-arm Imaging System allows our orthopaedic surgical specialists to view complete, multi-dimensional surgical images during complex orthopaedic procedures.

"The ability to view real-time, multidimensional images during a surgery is a huge advantage for our surgeons, and most importantly, our patients," said Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Laurel Blakemore, MD, who specializes in pediatric spine surgery. "Incorporating the O-arm into our practice allows for a higher level of quality and safety during these complex cases."

Designed to fit in an operating room, the O-arm provides real-time 3-dimensional imaging and 2-dimensional fluoroscopy during surgery. The imaging is high quality and low radiation and can rotate 360 degrees around a patient. Children’s National's Orthopaedic team uses the technology for complex spine and hip procedures.

Children’s performs nearly 14,000 surgeries annually, ranging from standard surgeries like ear tubes and hernia repair, to complex spine and neurological surgeries. Children’s National has one of the most experienced pediatric orthopaedic practices in the nation. In addition to the O-arm, Children’s was the first pediatric hospital in the nation to use an Intraoperative MRI in Neurosurgery.
