  Children’s National Neurologist Honored as Leader in Neuro-Oncology

Washington, DC – Children’s National Neurologist, Roger J. Packer, MD, internationally recognized as a leader in pediatric neuro-oncology, received the Founder’s Award at the 13th International Symposium on Pediatric Neuro-Oncology (ISPNO). The award was given by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. “Dr. Packer was instrumental in founding this group more than 20 years ago, and has championed this organization as it has grown to become the leading force for advancing research and care,” said Mike Traynor, president, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. “We applaud him for his vision and leadership in defining important protocols and best practices in treatment.”

Dr. Packer is the executive director of the Center for Neurosciences and Behavioral Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. He heads the Children’s Brain Tumor Institute, and is an active member of Children’s Research Institute, the academic arm of Children’s National. The Brain Tumor Institute, working through the Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinical Trials Consortium, has been selected by the National Cancer Institute to serve as one of only nine centers in the United States that performs innovative clinical research in neuro-oncology.

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is the world’s largest nongovernmental source of funding for childhood brain tumor research. The foundation also provides support to patients and families, including college scholarships for young adults recuperating from brain tumors.

Several researchers and specialists from Children’s National attended and presented at the ISPNO, including Tobey J. MacDonald, MD; Brian R. Rood, MD; and Robert F. Keating, MD. Dr. Packer presented on several research projects including findings from the Children’s Oncology Group regarding results from a number of studies conducted over the last 20 years in medulloblastoma.
