Children's National Medical Center Welcomes Queen and Duke of Edinburgh and First Lady May 8, 2007
Washington, DC – Children’s National Medical Center is pleased to host the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, along with First Lady Laura Bush to one of the premier children’s hospitals in the country. Her Majesty and His Royal Highness, along with other invited guests, will be greeted by staff and patients.
Her Majesty, His Royal Highness and Mrs. Bush will hear an overview of the cutting-edge research underway at Children’s Research Institute, which is located on the top floors of the medical center. Eric Hoffman, PhD, Director of the Center for Genetic Medicine Research, will give the presentation.
After Dr. Hoffman’s presentation, His Royal Highness will tour the research labs with Mark Batshaw, MD, Chief Academic Officer at Children’s National Medical Center. The tour will cover research in the areas of autism and Down syndrome, as well as brain tumor research.
While the Duke is touring Children’s Research Institute, Her Majesty and Mrs. Bush will visit with staff and patients on Children’s Heart and Kidney Unit. The guests will meet with Chief Medical Officer Peter Holbrook, MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery Richard Jonas, MD, Chief of Cardiology Gerard Martin, MD, and Director of the Fetal Heart Program Mary Donofrio, MD. Patients from Children’s world-renowned Cardiology team will present Her Majesty and Mrs. Bush with gifts.
Her Majesty and Mrs. Bush will complete their tour of Children’s with a walk through the Atrium to visit with special guests. Patients will decorate kites and cookies shaped like crowns.
