Your rank list. It’s yours. It’s private, if you want it to be.
Here are some last minute tips in these final moments. But rest assured there will be plenty more to come on this subject next year around this time!
Go for it. Write your favorite program first. Not other people’s favorite, but yours. You will never know if you would have matched at your dream program unless you rank it higher than other programs. Ultimately only you know or care whether you matched with your top (i.e. very tippy top choice) or with your almost top choice, or with your last choice for that matter.
And onto that last program way at the bottom of your list. If you’d rather not match
than begin orientation at Program Z this summer, then do leave Program Z off your list, otherwise list it way down there --perhaps last-- but at least on the list.
Who can you ask for help? Whom do you trust? Who knows you (and who doesn’t)? Your advisors, mentors, deans, peers, residents, significant other(s)? Ask former graduates from your medical school who have gone on to be residents at programs you are considering, they want to share what they know with you. And compile all the other input you’ve gathered along the way. But remember, it’s your list, and think about the advice your getting in the context of how it pertains to your best interest.
Now that you’ve done all those interviews, could you see yourself there
? With those
residents? In that
geographical location? With that many (or so few) interns in your cohort? For 3 years, or more? Will you learn? Will you survive? Thrive? Will you have a support system (friends? relatives? friendly program-peers? museums
? good food?) Will you be able to teach, mentor and be mentored, do research, consult with the best specialists, advocate for kids in the context of their families, their neighborhoods, their schools and their communities, if that’s your calling? Oh so many questions and considerations. Will you be happy?
Quick, what’s an algorithm
? Well at least this one’s in your favor (since 1998), as per the NRMP
Although some sneaker makers might say Just Do It, this is a time to really think before you click. But do just do it by the due date in February because that's your due date
. And then let the party, I mean the waiting and countdown to match day begin.
