I consider myself lucky that I had the opportunity to be medically trained in one of the Top 10 Best Children’s Hospitals in the United States: Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC). Not only was that experience a privilege, but I am also proud to be the first Emirati to be accepted to the Residency Training Program at CNMC. My story goes back to April 2012 when I first visited CNMC for an elective rotation at the Department of Genetics and Metabolism, as part of my medical degree. I spent two months learning a great deal from a number of consults and cases. It was a truly enriching experience that further nurtured my interest in the field of Medical Genetics. My ambitions were always to come back to CNMC to obtain my postgraduate training in Pediatrics first, followed by specialized studies in Medical Genetics. Shortly after that summer experience, my dream came true when I joined CNMC as a Pediatric Resident in October 2012.
My past three years of pediatric residency at CNMC has been full of learning opportunities, daily challenges, and memorable stories with my patients and colleagues. It is always busy at Children’s National Hospital! I learned how to effectively deal with challenging situations, how to become more efficient, and, above all, I have become a much more passionate Pediatrician. As one would expect during a residency program, the journey was bumpy at times, but the support from colleagues and from the outstanding leadership has been tremendously helpful in getting me through each day. My team at CNMC is more than colleagues and more than friends, We have become family, looking out for each other, standing up for each other, and sharing both happy and sad moments together.
I still feel extremely lucky as a Pediatrician at CNMC, as my training here has not yet ended. I will continue to come back for rotations during my Medical Genetics training for the next three years. My words cannot fully describe the inspiring and educational experience during my time at Children’s National but if I had to do it all again, I would choose CNMC in a heartbeat.
