Two Children's National Photos Selected for Children's Hospitals Association Photo Exhibit

Washington, DC – Two photographs by Children’s National Health System photographers were selected for inclusion in the 2015 Children’s Hospitals Photo Exhibit, a national competition administered by the Children’s Hospital Association. The exhibit, comprised of powerful images of brave patients, supportive families, and compassionate healthcare providers, celebrates children’s hospitals’ commitment to the health of all children.

The winning photographs, “Painting the Pain Away” by Mike Malone of Malone & Co. and “Race for Every Child” by Kirsten Lewis, were chosen by a distinguished panel of judges representing Parents magazine, The Exposure Group, The National Portrait Gallery, the American University School of Communications, and the Children’s Hospitals Today editorial advisory group. More than 250 photographs were submitted, representing 57 children’s hospitals across the country.
According to the judges, the two photographs stood out for their all-around excellence, composition, and ability to relay what makes children’s hospitals unique.

“Moments like the ones captured in these photographs demonstrate the strength and resilience of the young patients treated every day at Children’s National and children’s hospitals around the country,” said Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO of Children’s National. “It’s an honor to see these special images selected from among so many to celebrate the work of children’s hospitals everywhere.”

The first photograph, “Painting the Pain Away,” depicts 4-year-old Madison using art therapy while being treated in the oncology unit. The Children’s National Division of Oncology diagnoses and cares for more patients each year than all other metro area hospitals combined. The division was ranked among the top 15 pediatric cancer centers by U.S. News & World Report in 2014.

The second photograph, “Race for Every Child,” depicts 13-year-old Amelia and her dad participating in the Race for Every Child. Last year, Children’s National held the second Race for Every Child, the hospital’s annual charity run, raising more than $1 million with 4,700 runners and walkers.

The Children’s Hospitals Photo Exhibit will be on display in Washington, DC, to the general public June 15 -16 in the foyer of the Rayburn House Building and the week of June 22 in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Building. In addition, the exhibit will travel to children’s hospitals and partnering organizations around the country for two years.
