Washington, DC – In a ceremony last night, the Washington Business Journal announced Children’s National Health System as the Most Powerful Brand and its President and CEO, Kurt D. Newman, MD, as one of the Most Admired CEOs of 2014 in the Washington, DC, metropolitan region.

Children’s National was named Most Powerful Brand out of a group of 20 of the region’s most well-known brands representing a mix of for-profit and non-profit organizations across industries such as hospitality, education, and media.  Dr. Newman is recognized among a group of CEOs representing various businesses from finance to healthcare in the Washington, DC, area who exhibit the high level of leadership and skill it takes to be a successful CEO.

Dr. Newman has focused his tenure as President and CEO on how Children’s National can continue improving quality pediatric healthcare that puts children and families at the center of every decision. In looking at the current healthcare landscape, Dr. Newman has expanded existing programs and developed new ones to help Children’s National deliver the highest quality healthcare for children in the metropolitan region, the nation, and world.

“In the time that Dr. Newman has been our President and CEO, he has reaffirmed and expanded Children’s commitment to creating and applying innovative solutions to all aspects of care and research, meeting the needs of a changing healthcare landscape while doing what’s right for children and families,” said Michael J. Williams, Children’s National Chairman of the Board. “His acknowledgement, and our Most Powerful Brand recognition, highlight our strong commitment to the continued advancement of pediatric medicine through advocacy, care, education, and research.”

Building powerful and effective partnerships are a large aspect of what Dr. Newman has implemented at Children’s National. Last year, he announced the creation of the Bear Institute, developed in partnership with Cerner Corporation, to advance evidence-based pediatric care delivery, research, and education through innovation in electronic health information technology. Dr. Newman also led Children’s National into a partnership with Sibley Memorial Hospital in a bid to co-manage a pediatric photon radiation therapy program bringing an innovative treatment to young cancer patients.

This is not the first time that Dr. Newman’s work at Children’s National has caught the attention of the business and healthcare communities. Washington Business Journal also named Dr. Newman to this year’s Power 100 of 2014, a list recognizing the top Washington, DC-area business leaders with the most influence. Becker’s Hospital Review recently included Dr. Newman as one of 100 physician leaders of hospital and health systems, a list based on leaders' healthcare experience, accolades, and commitment to quality care.

Dr. Newman began as a surgeon at Children’s National in 1984 and became the Surgeon-in-Chief and Senior Vice President for the Joseph E. Robert Jr., Center for Surgical Care in 2003. He was instrumental in establishing the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, serving as the Acting Vice President when it was founded in 2009.
