Intern and Externships

Children’s National Health System offers comprehensive internship and externship programs in Child Life Services, Neuropsychology, Emergency Trauma, and Psychology. Our internship and externship programs are intensive, clinically based programs that offer students hands on experience delivering the highest quality of care designed with kids in mind.

Emergency Department Clinical Research Intern Program

This internship represents a unique opportunity for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students to directly participate in clinical research projects, attend research, healthcare and clinical operations- related lectures, observe overall ED operations, interact with physicians, nurses, and other health care personnel, and have the opportunity to create mentorship relationships with physicians.

Social Work Internship program

Having benefited from a diverse range of student placement experiences during our own education, we recognize the commitment to social work students as the future of our profession.

Neuropsychology Externship

This is an advanced assessment externship in the Division of Pediatric Neuropsychology at Children’s National. The program is under the direction of Gerry Gioia, Ph.D., and includes 12 faculty neuropsychologists, four pediatric psychologists, six postdoctoral fellows, as well as multiple predoctoral interns and externs.

Clinical Externships in Autism

Graduate students in clinical psychology or school psychology may apply for unpaid externship training with the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children’s National.

Psychology Externship Program

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers practicum level training experiences in child clinical and pediatric psychology to students enrolled in doctoral programs in psychology.

Psychology Internship Program

The internship is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association, initially earning accreditation in 1970.
