Many urologic disorders and illnesses are unique to children, or they affect them more than adults. That’s why it is important to trust your child’s care to a dedicated team of pediatric urologists.

At Children’s National Health System, our team has more than 100 years of combined experience diagnosing and treating disorders affecting reproductive and urinary organs in children.

Urology at Children’s National

At Children’s National, we work hard to anticipate your child’s needs. We create a personalized treatment plan for every child we treat, tailored to specific diagnosis, age, and individual needs. Our goal is to get your child the treatment he or she needs to enjoy healthy development.

Features of our urology program include:

  • Pioneers in robotic surgery: We are the only hospital in the Washington, DC, area that offers pediatric robotic surgery, and our surgery team is one of the most experienced in the country. We are responsible for developing some of the latest robotic-assisted procedures for surgery of the genitourinary tract.
  • Advanced diagnostic tests: We are national experts in two of the most advanced nuclear study tests used today for diagnosing problems in the kidneys and bladder: the Mag-3 diuresis renal scan and DMSA renal scan.
  • Family-centered environment: You can stay close by or even with your child for many of the diagnostic tests and procedures we perform. We make sure you know what to expect at every step, from diagnosis through treatment and surgery, and feel informed about all of your child’s options.
  • Convenience: We offer consultations at any of our Regional Outpatient Centers. To reduce the number of trips for your family, we schedule all imaging tests for the same day.
  • Team approach: We routinely review our complex cases on a weekly basis with all of the pediatric urologists in our practice. That means you get multiple experts weighing in on the best treatment course for your child.

Urologic Surgery at Children’s

When we recommend surgery as the best treatment option for your child, you can feel confident that your child’s care will be in the hands of one of the most experienced surgical teams in the Washington, DC, area and the U.S.

We use minimally invasive surgery whenever possible for our patients. The benefits of this advanced technique include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Minimal scarring
  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Less stress for families

For certain urologic surgeries, we use the da Vinci® robotic surgical system, which allows our surgeons to perform precise movements for even the smallest patients. At Children’s National, we have one of the most experienced robotic surgeons in the country.

Diagnostic Tests: What to Expect

We work closely with our expert technologists and radiologists in our department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology. We use the most advanced imaging technology available today in a family-friendly environment that allows us to get the most accurate results possible.

We may recommend one or more of the following tests for your child:

  • Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal scan: Nuclear imaging test that shows what the kidneys look like and how they are working to help diagnose kidney infections or scars. Download our Guide to DMSA.
  • Mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG-3) Diuresis renal scan: Nuclear imaging test that shows how your child’s kidneys are functioning and how well the ureters (small tubes that connect the bladder and kidneys) drain. Download our Guide to Lasix Renal Scan.
  • Renal bladder sonogram: Ultrasound imaging test that produces pictures without the use of radiation to show the structure of your child’s urinary system.
  • Urodynamic testing: Test that helps your child’s doctor see how the bladder fills ad empties to identify the cause of voiding disorders. Download our Guide to Urodynamic Testing. (En Espanol)
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG): X-ray test that allows your child’s doctor to see how the urinary system is functioning in real time.
