Spine Program at Children's National

From the expertise of our team to our advanced, pediatric-specific treatments, you can feel confident that your child will receive safe, personalized, and effective care at Children's National. Features of our spine program include:

  • Comprehensive care. We treat a wide range of conditions from deformities to trauma to tumors. Our pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and trauma specialists work closely together to provide the full spectrum of care for your child.
  • Protecting future growth. Managing pediatric spinal conditions can be complex. Treatments that may be effective for an adult may not be appropriate for children, who are still growing, both physically and neurologically. We are careful at every step of your child's care to treat the condition while not affecting your child's growth. Technology such as intraoperative CT scan (computerized tomography) helps us provide the most precise, effective surgery possible. Learn more about intraoperative CT.
  • Advanced treatments. We customize your child's treatment to offer him or her the best chance for long-term health. For example, we use the VEPTR device, an innovative procedure that helps children with severe chest and spine deformities breathe normally. Learn more about VEPTR at Children's National.
  • Level I Trauma Center. A Level I Trauma Center offers the highest level of critical care. Together with our orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, we offer comprehensive, rapid, and effective care for children. We have particular expertise in providing early treatment for spinal injuries in order to preserve your child's health and movement. We also coordinate with the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit when necessary. Learn more about critical care.
  • Collaboration. In addition to working with our neurosurgery and trauma departments, we collaborate with the rehabilitation team so we can begin spinal cord rehabilitation as soon as possible. We also work with orthotics, who specialize in customizing orthotic devices for children.
