Children’s National pediatric hearing and speech specialists provide diagnostic, treatment, and group therapy services for children with audiology (hearing) and communication disorders. Because these problems can affect a child’s development, we emphasize early diagnosis and early intervention.

The division’s care team includes renowned experts in the field and – one of our most celebrated team members – Elle the therapy dog. Elle (a standard poodle) and handler Sheela Stuart, PhD, Department Director and a Speech-Language Pathologist, work together to help patients especially, those who use augmentative and alternative communication devices.

Specialized Care for Kids

Children develop speech, language, and hearing skills at different times, but children usually reach defined milestones by a certain age. You should speak with your child’s physician when there are concerns about your child’s hearing or speech, and if any of the following occur:

  • An infant does not move or jump in response to a loud sound
  • An infant does not babble or make sounds by the age of 9 months
  • A child does not respond to sounds
  • A child has a poor voice quality
  • A child does not say any words by the age of 18 to 24 months (by the age of 2)
  • A child does not follow simple commands by the age of 2
  • Stuttering continues past the age of 5

Our comprehensive evaluation services include screenings for age-appropriate hearing, speech, and language milestones; hearing tests for newborns, infants and children; testing for hearing loss in babies; and evaluations of feeding/swallowing conditions.

We can also help patients and families with the management of hearing loss, and provide assistance with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive devices.

Multidisciplinary Programs

Many of our division specialists are part of programs that involve staff from several divisions at Children’s National. They coordinate treatment for patients with complex conditions or treatments requiring multispecialty care, such as:
