What to Expect
Before Your Visit
At the Fetal Medicine Institute at Children’s National Health System, we understand the difficult and emotional time that families experience when receiving a fetal diagnosis, so we strive to see you and your family as soon as possible after your referral. To help us achieve this goal, we have created a system to streamline your visit and minimize your stress.
When you are referred to the institute, you will be assigned a primary clinical care coordinator. Your care coordinator will work with your perinatologist or obstetrician and our team of specialists to determine the plan for your visit. One of our schedulers will then call you to schedule your appointments – we know your time is valuable, so we will do our best to schedule all of your appointments for the same day. For the safety of our patients, all patients and visitors are required to check in and obtain an ID badge before proceeding to their appointments. If your first appointment is for an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or ultrasound, the welcome desk staff can direct you to the Children’s National Radiology department on the second floor of the main hospital. If your first appointment is in the Fetal Medicine Institute, the welcome desk staff will direct you to our space in Suite M3-119 on the third floor of the main hospital.

In the institute, you will meet with your care coordinator and scheduled specialists in a private consultation room. Each private room is equipped with a high-definition monitor, which the specialists will use to show and discuss your imaging study results.
At the end of your visit, we will:
- Summarize findings from your visit
- Review our follow-up care recommendations
- Make sure we have answered all your questions
After your visit, we will:
- Discuss your visit results and recommendations with your referring provider
- Provide a written clinical report to your provider within approximately four business days of your visit
- Develop a recommended care plan, which we will provide to you, your referring provider, your delivery provider, and your delivery hospital; this plan is sent approximately four weeks before your expected delivery date and includes any recommended postnatal imaging studies and/or visits, as well as care recommendations for the labor, delivery, and postnatal periods
In some cases, additional fetal evaluations are recommended during your pregnancy. If so, our scheduling team will arrange these appointments for you.
