Regular visits with Children's National pediatric dentists help protect your child's healthy smile. The Division of Pediatric Dentistry is a comprehensive oral health program specifically designed for young patients, from check-ups to complex dental procedures, with a team that knows how to make a visit at the dentist's less painful and more comfortable.

The division accepts new patients that are 10 years old or younger, patients with special needs that are 14 years old or younger, and new patients older than 14 after a consultation with a dentist.

The Importance of a Pediatric Dentist

A dental exam can reveal other conditions, and a pediatric dentist is trained to recognize these signs and symptoms in a growing child. In addition to preventive services, a hospital-based pediatric dentist has the expertise to treat problems associated with inherited disorders, and underlying medical or developmental conditions.

Our dentists are uniquely qualified to care for children who are medically fragile or compromised, patients with physical or mental difficulties, maxillofacial anomalies, and children with a traumatic injury to the face or jaw.

Our advanced preventive and emergency dental care services for infants, children, and adolescents, include:

  • Conscious sedation dentistry
  • Dental care for medically compromised and developmentally challenged children
  • Dental emergencies
  • Dental treatment under anesthesia
  • Infant oral health
  • Nursing bottle caries
  • Oral surgery
  • Orthodontics and braces
  • Sealants
  • Tooth decay (cavities)
  • Toothache (pulpitis)
  • Wisdom teeth extraction

Specialized Dental Care for Kids

At Children's National, your child has access to a wide range of specialists in gum health, supporting bony structures, the alignment of teeth, or other specialties.

The team's orthodontists can help restore function and appearance for patients with complex orthodontic conditions, such as a misaligned jaw, and are experts in identifying treatments that minimize the time a child has to wear braces or other corrective devices.

And when your child needs anesthesia or sedation for a procedure, Children's National is the only hospital in the Washington, DC, area that guarantees a fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologist administers anesthesia at all times.
