The Airway Clinic is a specialized program in the Division of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat), one the largest and most prestigious pediatric otolaryngology programs in the country.

George Zalzal, MD, the Division Chief and an international authority on airway reconstruction, coordinates your child’s care with the clinic’s dedicated care team. Our specialists evaluate and treat children from around the world for various pediatric airway disorders, including chronic (long term) breathing problems and complications from surgical procedures.

Because airway abnormalities are unique for each patient, so too is the care your child receives. Children’s National physicians and specialists evaluate and manage each patient individually. A consultation includes a complete evaluation of the upper aero-digestive tract (airway, pulmonary, and upper digestive) and we discuss potential options for treatment with you and your family.

Conditions we treat include:

  • An obstruction or blockage in the airway
  • Congenital laryngeal stridor (laryngomalacia)
  • Stridor (unusual breathing sounds)
  • Complications after a tracheotomy (a procedure performed on the neck to open an airway)
