About the Provider
Hans Pohl, MD, is the chief of Urology at Children's National Hospital. He was born of mixed German and Latino heritage in Los Angeles and he grew up speaking English and Spanish interchangeably. Dr. Pohl attended the University of California, San Diego where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry and cell biology with an emphasis in marine biochemistry and a minor in Spanish literature. He moved to Washington, D.C., to attend medical school "as an experiment to experience the East Coast" but he stayed for the many opportunities and working relationships he has established over the years.
During medical school, Dr. Pohl became interested in surgery, with a particular fascination for reconstructive procedures. He completed his residency at The George Washington University in the Department of Surgery and Department of Urology. He had all intentions of completing his residency in general urology and joining a private practice.
However, during his pediatric urology rotation at Children's National, Dr. Pohl was stimulated by the unique problems afflicting the urinary tracts of infants and children, and he found the ideal mentorship in A. Barry Belman, MD, and H. Gil Rushton, MD
Dr. Pohl completed a two-year research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and a two-year pediatric urology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital before joining the faculty at Children's National in 2002.
Dr. Pohl is particularly interested in hydronephrosis, urinary tract infections and vesicoureteral reflux, but he has developed extensive experience in treating all pediatric urological problems, including spina bifida and exstrophy.
