Support Services for Families
When a child suffers an injury, is diagnosed with an illness, or is hospitalized, it’s our goal to provide the highest quality of care for each child and family. At Children’s National, we know it’s not just the children who need support and guidance. We’ve created an experience designed with kids and families in mind, a place focused on their unique physical and emotional needs. Every day, we go above and beyond to treat children and families with respect and compassion.
The Family Services Team
Our Family Services team is composed of social workers, child life specialists, and pastoral care chaplains, who all work to meet the needs of the whole family during their experience with us. Whether you are visiting for an outpatient appointment or staying overnight at the hospital, the Family Services team is available to help you navigate the process, understand the decisions that need to be made, and offer a shoulder to lean on during difficult times.

Case managers are registered nurses who will work with you and the team to plan for your child’s discharge.
Our Child Life Specialists are specially trained and certified to help children, adolescents, and families understand and cope with illness, treatment, and hospitalization.
Hospitals can seem like a scary place to children, whether they are a patient or a sibling.To help alleviate a family’s fears and anxiety, our Clown Care team provides artistic, humorous entertainment for our patients and families visiting or staying in the hospital.
Children's National Health System's Concierge Services team aims to help families feel more at home during their visit or stay, whether it's assisting with hotel accommodations or simply providing toiletries to families.
Creative and Therapeutic Arts Services helps children transcend the hospital experience by bringing the cultural arts, arts education, and animal visitation to patients at bedside and in the Atrium.
Our dedicated staff can help parents and patients with ethical concerns about medical treatment and patient care issues. The program also educates clinicians, staff, residents, and medical students on ethics in pediatrics and provides open and non-judgmental consultation services to patients, families, and staff.
If you do not have health insurance, our financial counselors can help you determine if you are eligible to apply for Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and will help you through the process. We also can help you apply for our Charity or Financial Assistance Programs, under which part or all of your medical bills at Children’s may be reduced or forgiven.
Interpreters are available for patients and families who may be deaf, hard of hearing, or who may not speak English as their first language at no cost.
At Children’s National, we understand how important breastfeeding is for families and we aim to provide mothers with the caring support, knowledge, and encouragement they need.
