Charlotte L's Story: Parent's Letter Project
Dear parents of a child with tricuspid atresia,
At almost 6 months of pregnancy, Mary Donofrio, MD, informed me that my daughter had a condition called tricuspid atresia. She was very nice and took time to explain everything to me and continued to monitor me through my pregnancy. Charlotte was born in January and was rushed straight to Children's National soon after she was born.
She received her first open heart surgery at nine days old. She was there for two months and during that whole emotional experience, every nurse and doctor that we came into contact with was always caring and understanding. They took the time to come in and meet with me daily to go over her health for the day. The nurses showed me how to bathe her and care for her while she was there and always looked after my comfort.
Today, Charlotte is a happy and healthy 10-month-old who has met all her milestones and is crawling. I know how terrifying this experience can be, but with the help of everyone at Children's National and also a great social worker, Charlotte is thriving.
