Choosing a Hospital for Your Child

Parents have many healthcare options for their child and it can be confusing to understand how to choose the best care. Here are some questions that parents should consider asking when making a decision about where to take their child for treatment.

  • Are the intensive care units staffed by specially trained, pediatric intensivists?
  • If my child needs surgery, are the physicians pediatric anesthesiologists?
  • Does the hospital practice family/patient-centered care?
  • Does the hospital include nurses in its leadership and in key decision making?
  • Is the hospital recognized for its safety culture?
  • Are prescriptions for medicines and orders for tests and procedures entered directly into a computer?
  • Does the hospital have an Emergency Department and equipment designed just for pediatric patients?
  • Does the hospital have board-certified specialists for my child’s condition?
  • Is the hospital designated a Level 1 or 2 Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons or by your state licensing board?
