Educational Opportunities

We place the highest priority on resident education, with a multitude of conferences and educational opportunities.

  • Noon Conference: Daily hour-long lecture series within a year-long curriculum which features high-quality, faculty-led lectures covering American Board of Pediatrics content specifications. There are a variety of educational sessions that are components of the noon conference curriculum, including Professorial Rounds, Evidence-Based Medicine Journal Club, Board Review, and Morbidity and Mortality Conferences.
  • Professorial Rounds: Weekly, case-based, multidisciplinary, and highly interactive discussions facilitated by a core group of faculty with the goal of modeling attending-level clinical reasoning and decision-making.
  • Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Journal Clubs: Monthly sessions facilitated by the program director, chief residents, or faculty to develop critical analysis skills as well as incorporate relevant medical knowledge into daily clinical practice. Morbidity and mortality conferences focused on cases as part of a safety curriculum developed in conjunction with our risk management department; and board review for second-year residents.
  • Board Review: Weekly sessions led by second year residents under the guidance of a faculty mentor with multiple-choice PREP questions which utilize interactive audience response units
  • Resident Morbidity and Mortality Conference: Monthly conferences that are led by several residents and one faculty mentor which is presented in a case-based approach and designed to discuss adverse patient events and develop quality improvement initiatives.
  • Morning Report: Case-based discussion led by senior residents twice per week prior to work rounds which focus on clinical and diagnostic reasoning as well as early management and treatment.
  • Attending Rounds (aka Teaching Rounds): Fellow- and faculty-led didactic sessions occurring three-four times per week before work rounds on all rotations; topics are pertinent to each rotation.
  • Grand Rounds: Hospital-wide conference held on Wednesday morning from September to June which draws nationally recognized speakers and leaders of innovation to Children’s National.
  • Chief Lecture Series: Chief-led curriculum held on Wednesday mornings in July and August that focuses on a variety of practical clinical and communicative skills.
  • Mock Codes: Every other month, Emergency Department faculty lead small groups of residents through mock code scenarios; monthly mock codes also take place on acute care units simulated codes led by Emergency Department faculty which occur monthly and allow residents of all training levels to work together to hone emergent medical practice. Additionally, ICU rotations conduct monthly multidisciplinary unit-based mock codes.
  • Simulation Sessions: Monthly sessions for residents on inpatient teams held in a state-of-the-art simulation center.
  • Night Team Teaching: Nightly teaching sessions for our intern night team taught by the night senior residents and attendings.

Children’s National recognizes that easily accessible, high-fidelity, self-directed education is vital to resident education. In response to this need, a team of dedicated and education-focused information technology experts have created ResidentBook, a robust web-based educational portal that is also integrated into our electronic medical record system. ResidentBook is the central repository for all residency and rotation-specific information and also serves as the home for a wide selection of popular medical resources. ResidentBook additionally provides our residents with interactive educational modules and resources designed to enhance learning through targeted, self-direction. Our team of information technology experts continually work to identify educational needs and improve ResidentBook with innovative solutions.
