Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Division of Pediatric Neuropsychology at Children’s National Health Stystem offers two-year, full-time postdoctoral fellowships in neuropsychology. Typically, there are three openings each year. While all three positions include broad training in pediatric neuropsychology, two of the positions allow for additional specialization in autism spectrum disorders or mTBI/ concussion. The postdoctoral training program at Children's National belongs to the Association for Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN), and is therefore designed to meet the criteria set forth by the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology. We participate in the APPCN match program, and all applicants must register with the National Matching Service. Upon completion of the fellowship, trainees will have gained the necessary clinical and research skills for independent practice in pediatric neuropsychology, as well as the knowledge base to pursue board certification in clinical neuropsychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP-Cn).

Postdoctoral fellows complete comprehensive outpatient neuropsychological evaluations with a range of patient populations, including children and adolescents with medical diagnoses and those with neurodevelopmental disorders. Training opportunities also include rotations through the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, SCORE program, Executive Function Clinic, Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program, and hematology-oncology. Postdoctoral fellows participate in formal didactics and professional development opportunities such as experience providing supervision to pre-doctoral trainees. Residency positions are funded for at least 20% research time. Current research projects include concussion/ mild Traumatic Brain Injury, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and neurofibromatosis.

Applications are accepted each January, and competitive candidates are interviewed at the annual meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society or on site. Applicants should have completed APA/CPA-approved doctoral programs in Clinical, School, or Counseling Psychology and an APA/CPA-accredited predoctoral internship. Applicants should have an established interest and prior clinical experience with children and adolescents, as well as prior training in the area of neuropsychological assessment. Our postdoctoral fellows are expected to be actively involved in research, and as such, candidates should have completed an empirical dissertation and formal coursework in statistics and research methodology as part of their graduate program. The dissertation must be defended prior to the start of the fellowship on September 1.

Q: How long is the program/length of training?

A: This is a two-year, full-time training position.

Q: What are the benefits of the program

A: Please see the current brochure or contact us for current salary information and benefits. Children’s National Health System offers an excellent benefits package. Postdoctoral residents accrue four weeks of annual leave (vacation) per year. We also allow one week professional/ conference leave and a professional expense budget of $1,000/ year. There are nine paid federal holidays and one "floating" holiday (employee can choose). The hospital provides health insurance, optional dental and vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance program, back-up child care assistance, optional life and disability insurance.

Q: Is this a research or a clinical position?

A: This is primarily a clinical training position. Following the scientist-practitioner model, however, our Fellows are actively involved in ongoing clinical research as well, and have 20-30 percent of their time protected for this.

Q: What prior experience is required?

A: The following are required in order for your application to be competitive:

  1. A doctoral degree from an accredited graduate program, in a health service delivery area of psychology. Usually this would be an APA- or CPA-approved PhD or PsyD program in Clinical Psychology or Neuropsychology. We will also consider applicants from accredited School or Counseling Psychology programs if they have substantial, relevant clinical experience.
  2. A clinical psychology internship. We strongly prefer APA- or CPA-approved internships.
  3. Substantial prior clinical experience in both neuropsychology and in child and adolescent/ pediatric psychology. Most applicants have several relevant pre-doctoral externship placements, as well as a major rotation in pediatric neuropsychology on internship.
  4. Experience conducting research, such as completion of an empirical dissertation.

Q: Can I apply if my graduate program and/ or internship is not APA/CPA-accredited?

A: Yes, although this may make your application significantly less competitive. If possible, include additional information in your application. For example, if your graduate program or internship is in the process of applying for accreditation, include a letter from your Training Director that explains this. We are looking for the best overall "fit" to our program, but in general, an APA/CPA-approved graduate program is required and an APA-/CPA-approved internship is strongly preferred.
