Children’s National Unveils New Helipad
More than 200 feet above Washington, DC, Children’s National unveiled a new helipad that has state-of-the-art safety and security features for enhanced operations. The helipad was debuted Monday, September 10, when President and CEO Kurt Newman, MD, cut the ribbon.
Accompanying Dr. Newman was David Wessel, MD, Senior Vice President of Hospital-Based Specialties, Jennifer Schuette, MD, Chief of Transport Medicine, and Scott James, RN, MBA, Director of Transport Medicine, as well as paramedics, physicians, respiratory therapists, and nurses who help care for patients transported to Children’s National.
The new helipad has the highest safety standards, including:
• Increased weight capacity with lighter-weight aluminum surfacing
• New L.E.D. safety lighting
• Enhanced safety and security egress points
• De-icing capabilities that activate as temperatures approach freezing
“As a Level 1 Trauma Center, it’s important to ensure our transport services are at the ready to care for patients, and our improved helipad helps ensure we’re prepared,” said Dr. Schuette.
The Division of Transport Medicine oversees more than 6,500 transports annually, and 550 are air transports. Children’s National Medical Center has the region’s primary pediatric and neonatal transport medicine specialists comprised of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists.
