On August 15, 2008, the Centers for Neuroscience Research and Clinical and Community Research began their move to a new research space atop the main Children’s National building. This expansion adds 20,000 square feet of research offices, conference rooms, and laboratories, bringing the total square footage of Children’s Research Institute to 100,000. The new floor houses the Biostatistics and Informatics Core, which supports quantitative research designs across CRI from basic to community research and the Cellular Imaging Core (CIC). The CIC provides imaging services to all four centers via the latest imaging technology, including two photon microscopes. Additionally, the new laboratory space features live video cell–imaging, multiple onsite cell culture labs, and the capability to develop three-dimensional cell reconstruction based on microscope images. The addition was officially unveiled in late fall after both centers were well-settled in their new location. This opening also allows the Centers for Cancer and Immunology Research and Genetic Medicine Research to expand their operations on the existing research floor. These expansions will allow principal investigators from every center to work side-by-side, opening doors for greater collaborations from the bench to the bedside and out into the community.
