Abdulla’s story
Abdulla arrived to Children’s National Medical Center in August 2007 from the United Arab Emirates as a 10-month-old baby with the hopes of surviving intestinal failure and secondary microvillus inclusion disease. Abdulla’s father, Mohammad, was determined to receive the best treatment for his son, because his daughter had passed away from the same congenital disease at the age of 3.
Abdulla was listed for a small bowel and liver transplant at Children’s National and had weekly appointments with Clarivet Torres, MD, the director of the intestinal rehabilitation program for pre- and post-transplant care and evaluation. Dr. Torres believed Abdulla was a great candidate for receiving a liver and small bowel transplantation. Days seemed like months, and months seemed like years for the Alrumaithis, but the family’s determination kept them optimistic for the anticipated day of surgery. Finally on April 2, 2008, Abdulla’s family received the call to come in for transplantation. Abdulla’s transplant was a success, and the family’s year-long stress was finally relieved.
“Having my boy back, I feel really happy and grateful to Children’s Hospital”, said father Mohammad Alrumaithi.
Abdulla and his family have since returned to the United Arab Emirates and have stayed in contact with Children’s updating us with his excellent progress.
