Children's experiencing platelet shortage

Platelets are a component of whole blood and whole blood can be donated at Children's Blood Donor Center located on the second floor of the hospital in room 2700, the Blood Donor Center’s hours of operation are:
  • Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 am to 4 pm
  • Wednesdays from 7 am to 2:30 pm
  • Fridays from 7 am to 3:30 pm
  • Select Saturdays
Hours are subject to change.

Platelets are the clotting factor in blood and are frequently given to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Platelets can be donated every two weeks, but they have a shelf life of only five days.
