Overview Our Tracks How to Apply Benefits / Contracts Resident Life

The Robert H. Parrott REACH Program

In 2000, our Children’s residency program embarked on a very unique experience, the REACH program. It is named after a distinguished former chairman of pediatrics, Robert H. Parrott, who was an internationally recognized pediatrician, researcher, and leader. Dr. Parrott who led a transformation of our institution from a community-based hospital for children into the large, academic tertiary-care center that we are today.

REACH stands for Research, Education, Advocacy, and Child Health care, which are the cornerstone elements of this program. Residents are provided with an opportunity to apply for half-day per week protected time in the second and third years of training to pursue projects and activities in these areas. Essentially, this is a longitudinal elective rotation. Since its inception, residents have pursued a variety of clinical, volunteer, research, and educational topics under the direct mentorship of Children’s National clinical and research faculty. Each year, several of our residents publish their REACH projects in peer-reviewed journals and present them at major national meetings.
