We are the largest and oldest fellowship program in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Our fellows find that having three fellows working together constitutes a critical mass that provides for a wonderful camaraderie and professional interaction which further enhances their education as well as their overall experience. Each year we offer three fellowship positions: two to US/Canadian graduates and one preferably to a qualified international candidate committed to return to his/her home country.
Washington D.C is an exciting community in which to live and work, with many cultural and recreational opportunities. It is also an area rich with ophthalmic educational opportunities which we incorporate into your fellowship experience. Besides the Monthly Division of Ophthalmology Grand Rounds at CNMC you will also attend the monthly Walter Reed Pediatric Ophthalmology Conference, which has patients referred from around the world for evaluation and treatment, and the combined George Washington University/Uniformed Services University Monthly Grand Rounds. The National Eye Institute, with their world class Uveitis service, is available to us for consultation, meetings and coordinated care of patients. Journal Clubs take advantage of internationally known guest speakers in our specialty who practice in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and throughout the country.
As a graduate of the CNMC Fellowship you will be eligible for membership in the Costenbader Society and will be able to attend the annual meeting as a Fellow. In addition, you will attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), the Wills Pediatric Ophthalmology Day in Philadelphia and either a Board Review Course or the Annual Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Course in Ophthalmology. The Costenbader Society also makes available two unique educational experiences for our Fellows. Each year internationally recognized specialists visit our program as the Angeline Parks Visiting Professor and as the Distinguished Alumni Visiting Professor. These are excellent opportunities to spend two days (including a small private dinner) with leading figures in our profession.
It is our goal to provide you a busy, rewarding year in which you will experience tremendous growth and satisfaction and that will leave you confident and prepared to handle all facets of Pediatric Ophthalmology patients.
