General Academic Pediatric Fellowship
Education
Clinical
Clinical training occurs primarily at one of the five community-based primary care Children’s Health Centers. Each site has earned the designation of a Patient Centered Medical Home. Fellows will have 40% clinical times and will participate in all aspects of the clinical care team including on-call, attendance at clinic site staff meetings and quality improvement activities. Additional clinical training in the care of medically complex, obesity management, adolescent teen-tot care management and quality improvement are also available.
Academic
The academic program consists of community –based clinical care, formal educational sessions, peer and senior mentorship, division and hospital-wide conferences, and faculty development seminars. Fellows attend a bi-monthly seminar series with fellows from other divisions, which focus on medical education, research skills, quality improvement and leadership. This series is taught by faculty members within and outside of the division, many of whom have completed the Master Teacher Program in medical education. General Pediatrics Division conferences occur on a monthly basis, and consist of research, quality improvement and general pediatric topic discussions. Fellows are expected to contribute to division conferences and play a major teaching role in the clinical setting. On a regular basis, faculty members observe the fellow’s teaching activities and provide feedback.
Administrative
Fellows will complete a Clinical Administration Preceptorship during Year 2 of training working with the inter-professional health center team which includes nursing leadership, clinic managers, as well as physicians. Fellows will be expected to acquire observational knowledge of leadership of a community health center including but not limited to strategic planning, management, finance and negotiation. Participation in a performance improvement initiative within the General Pediatrics Division will facilitate exposure to such topics as risk management, safety, quality, and infection control. Fellows will also learn about effective leadership, management, coding and billing, and budgeting.
