Biography

Brian Brooks, MD, PhD, is one of a handful of physicians nationwide who is accredited by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Medical Genetics. He is the founding director of the National Ophthalmic Disease Genotyping Network (eyeGENE) and the recipient of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Young Investigator Award.

He is currently a tenure-track researcher at the National Eye Institute and director of the Unit on Pediatric, Developmental and Genetic Eye Disease. Dr. Brooks’ clinical and research interests are in the genetics of inherited eye disease, particularly abnormalities in ocular development.

Dr. Brooks graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland and completed his M.D. and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. His thesis research was on mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Dr. Brooks completed his ophthalmology residency and pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at the University of Michigan, where he won several awards for research and teaching. He then completed a second fellowship in Medical Genetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute.
