The SCORE Program - Baseline Concussion Testing

The SCORE Concussion Program of Children’s National Medical Center provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive model of concussion care for the safety of your student-athletes.

Dear Parents and Coaches:
The SCORE Concussion Program of Children’s National Medical Center would like to implement a state-of-the-art, comprehensive model of concussion care for the safety of your student-athletes. This program involves education for parents, coaches and athletes, together with baseline assessments of cognitive functions and symptoms of the student-athletes. The baseline cognitive testing assesses key areas of brain function including memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time, which will be used in the event of a concussion to better treat this injury. The program is similar to the concussion programs used with high school, college, and professional athletic organizations, including the NHL. The service is provided for a minimal charge and includes educational seminars and computerized baseline assessments.

What is involved for the Child?
Testing involves a computerized test of memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time as well as baseline symptom assessment. The NHL, NFL, NASCAR, MLB and others give the same test.
Time Required:
  • Children (12-years-old and under: 30-45 minutes
  • Teenagers (13-years-old and over): 30 minutes

What is involved for the Parents and/or Coaches?
Any successful program of concussion safety begins with education. Early recognition of a concussion is essential to maximize safe management. Parents and coaches attend an informational session to learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion, and learn important “first aid” steps to manage a suspected injury. Fact Sheets, clipboard stickers, and handy pocket cards are provided.

How much does the program cost?
The group/team (8+ players) cost of the educational seminar and baseline assessment is $20 per player. The individual rate is $40 per player.

Dear Student-Athletes and Coaches:
The SCORE Concussion Program of Children’s National Medical Center provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive model of concussion care for the safety of your student-athletes. This program involves education for coaches and athletes, together with baseline assessments of cognitive functions and symptoms of the student-athletes. The goal of the program is to implement a system of early identification with a game plan for how to handle the injury. This begins with a team approach, where everyone is involved and has a basic understanding of the injury.

What is involved in the Program?
  • Testing for the student-athlete involves a computerized test of memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time; and baseline symptom assessment. Same test given in the NHL, NFL, NASCAR, MLB and others. The testing session will last about 30 minutes.
