Skeletal Dysplasia Clinic

For more than 25 years, the Skeletal Dysplasia Clinic has provided multidisciplinary care for infants, children, and young adults with various forms of skeletal disorders.

There are more than 200 types of skeletal dysplasias, which affect bones and joints, and interfere with development. The more recognized forms include Achondroplasia and other types of dwarfism, and Osteogenesis imperfecta, often referred to as brittle bone disease.

Whether your child has a mild or more severe skeletal dysplasia, these conditions are rare and treatment requires the expertise of specialists from many disciplines who can make the initial diagnosis and provide appropriate care as a child grows. As well, specialists can often make a prenatal diagnosis so treatment can begin as soon as possible.

Children’s Skeletal Dysplasia Program is unique in the Washington, DC area, providing consultative services for expectant families with suspected skeletal dysplasias or birth defects, including clubfeet or limb deficiencies.

We coordinate your child’s treatment starting with the initial diagnosis through continued care, and help families learn how to manage these conditions. For the convenience of families and comfort of patients, we arrange for children to see related specialists from genetics, orthopedics, radiology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation in a single clinic visit.

The program also collaborates with Children’s Bone Health Clinic, which focuses on helping patients maintain strong bones, for the optimal health of patients from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood.
