Inpatient Cardiology
Inpatient Cardiology in Children’s Heart and Kidney Unit is part of the progressive and comprehensive care for cardiac patients provided through Children’s National Heart Institute, one of the top pediatric cardiac centers in the nation.
While at Children’s National, patients and families have access to a team of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, critical care specialists, neonatologists, and nurse practitioners who provide comprehensive medical and surgical care. All members of the team, which also includes nurses, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, and child life specialists, specialize in care for children with heart disease and their families.
Dedicated Hospitalists
Hospitalist physicians work as an extension of the patient’s primary cardiologist, focusing on the medical care of patients who require hospitalization for treatment of a cardiac condition.
Hospitalists in the Heart and Kidney Unit are cardiologists with extensive training and experience in providing expert care for infants and children with cardiac conditions. They provide care in consultation with your child’s primary cardiologist, primary care physician, and related subspecialists.
They also assist in care for the growing number of patients admitted to Children’s Adult Congenital Heart Program (Washington Adult Congenital Heart) for continued cardiac care.
Family-Centered Care
What sets Children’s apart is our commitment to the entire family. Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (Cardiac ICU) even lets siblings visit seven days a week — the familiar face of a brother or sister can do wonders for a child’s spirit, we’ve seen it happen.
Social workers, counselors, concierge support staff, and family services teams are available to assist, and a parent advisory council meets monthly to ensure that the needs of our families are met. Parents are encouraged to participate in discussions about their child’s treatment plan, and are invited to participate in daily team rounds while on the cardiology inpatient unit.
