Transport Medicine
Children’s National Medical Center is the only hospital in the Washington, DC, area with a rapid air and ground transport system dedicated exclusively for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. Children’s highly specialized pediatric and neonatal transport team transports more than 5,000 neonates and children each year.
The Division of Transport Medicine is ready to dispatch its resources to referring facilities at a moment’s notice by either ground (ambulance) or air (helicopter). The team is led by Jennifer Schuette, MD (Critical Care Medicine), Billie L. Short, MD (Neonatology), and David J. Mathison, MD MBA (Emergency Medicine and Trauma Services), to ensure that patients receive appropriate critical treatments during their transfer to or from Children’s National.
When it comes to critical care medicine, emergency medicine and trauma services, getting support where and when you need it is everything. When your child needs urgent care at Children’s National, we are ready to dispatch our pediatric and neonatal ground and teams at a moment’s notice.
As the region’s primary transport medicine specialists, we provide critical treatment as soon as possible, even on the go. Children’s physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and emergency medical technicians (EMT) are specially trained in transport medicine for kids. Plus, all of the transport teams work with pediatric-sized equipment. This customization minimizes the risk to patients in transit to Children’s National.
Through Children’s Lifeline, we offer one point of contact for referring physicians, to provide critical medical advice, transport logistics, and hospital admission. Patients receive care tailored to their needs, and the quality of care you expect from one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals.
Children’s team also follows-up with referring medical facilities. By making the transition seamless, the healthcare team can focus on what is really important – your child’s health.
