The causes of kidney diseases and the impact on body systems are different in children. Treatment for these conditions often continues into adulthood, and a pediatric nephrologist understands how the condition and care affect a child who is still growing.

Division Chief Kanwal K. Kher, MD, MBA, recognized as one of the Washington, DC, area's top physicians, and the division's pediatric nephrologists, nurses, dieticians, social workers, and support staff, comprise a team with the expertise to treat complex renal (kidney) disorders and related pediatric conditions, including:
• Acute glomerulonephritis
• Acute renal failure
• Chronic glomerulonephritis
• Chronic kidney disease
• Congenital kidney disease and malformations
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome
• Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP)
• Hypertension
• IgA nephopathy
• Inherited kidney disease
• Nephritis
• Obstructive uropathy
• Polysistic kidney diseases
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Vasculitis

Nationally Recognized for Excellent Care
Our highly skilled team not only achieved the highest number of transplants in 2011, but also received the Silver Level performance from the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice in 2012. This award recognizes outstanding performances in post-transplant survival rates, transplant rates and mortality rates after being placed on the waitlist. The division's pediatric nephrologists and specialists perform the initial diagnostic procedures and treatments, arrange and coordinate transplant services, and help families understand all aspects of follow-up care.

We also provide an essential supportive role for families when longer-term care management is necessary, including training for home dialysis. The division has a dedicated post-transplant pediatrician, and around the clock physician coverage for children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) — critical care in a child and family-focused environment.

Dialysis and Therapy Services Exclusively for Children
Children's National has the only stand-alone, pediatric dialysis facility in the region with a dedicated dialysis program exclusively for children. One of several designated therapy programs offered through the division, the environment enables our nurses and physicians to provide care in a setting specifically designed for children.
