Minimally Invasive Surgery
At Children’s National Medical Center, our surgeons always consider using a minimally invasive approach whenever possible in pediatric surgery. Minimally invasive surgery involves using small incisions – often just a few millimeters – rather than one large, open incision. Surgeons insert narrow tubes with a light and camera attached to the end, which are called endoscopes, to guide and perform the surgery. In certain cases, our surgeons are also using robotic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, which is another minimally invasive technique.
Benefits of minimally invasive surgery may include a shorter recovery time, less time in the hospital, less pain, and small scars. Not all surgeries can be performed this way, but the surgeons at Children’s National will discuss all options to determine what is best for your child and your family.

Our surgeons are leaders in the field of minimally invasive surgery and have trained many of the pediatric surgeons who are practicing today. General and Thoracic Chief of Surgery, Timothy Kane, MD, is a forerunner in neonatal minimally invasive surgery and is often able to repair complex diagnoses – including tracheosophageal fistula, duodenal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and intestinal malrotation – using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Craig Peters, MD, is a pioneer in robot surgery, developing new minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedures, specializing in infants, children, and adolescents needing surgery from illnesses of the genitourinary tract.
Additionally, many other surgeons, including neurosurgeons, cardiac surgeons, and interventional cardiologists are able to perform complex surgeries through minimally invasive techniques.
While each patient is unique, below is a list of some conditions that may be treated using minimally invasive surgery.
