Hospitalist Program at Holy Cross Hospital
Holy Cross is a community hospital pediatric service with a strong academic component. The Holy Cross contingent of Children’s National Medical Center hospitalists supervise pediatric residents and students, consult in the emergency department, and provide direct patient care to approximately 1,600 of the 7,500 newborns delivered annually in the term nursery and many of the 1,800 pediatric patients admitted annually to the 24-bed inpatient unit.
As the primary teachers for the residents and students, hospitalists discuss all patients during daily teaching rounds. Ideas regarding patient evaluation and management gleaned from teaching rounds are discussed with primary care physicians, so residents learn from both the hospitalists and community primary care physicians. Hospitalists assist trainees in evaluating and managing complex or severely-ill patients and in performing a variety of procedures.
