Emergency Trauma and Burn Services
The Emergency Trauma and Burn Service of the Children’s National Medical Center responds with a 17-member acute response team representing surgery, emergency medicine, nursing, surgical specialists, and social work, to provide immediate intervention when a critically injured or burned child arrives at Children’s. Working closely with the Division of Emergency Medicine, the trauma team assesses the child to determine the appropriate care plan.
Coordination with regional or international Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is arranged by the Emergency Communication and Information Center for ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing transports to Children’s.
Children’s has been a Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons, for more than 20 years, serving children and families of the greater Washington metropolitan area. Children’s partners with the Maryland Shock Trauma System, serving the five counties of Montgomery, Prince Georges’ St. Mary, Calvert and Charles counties. Children’s accepts patients from all geographic areas and is never on fly-by status.
Each year approximately 1,000 injured children, including 200 children suffering from burns, are treated by the Emergency Trauma and Burn Service. Continuity of care from admission to discharge through rehabilitation is provided by expert surgical and nursing specialists in trauma and burn care. Children’s Outpatient Burn Clinic cares for approximately 70 patients each week.
Injury prevention is part of the mission of Children’s Trauma and Burn Service, in conjunction with SAFE KIDS Worldwide, to decrease the leading causes of death in children from motor vehicle crashes, bicycle crashes, pedestrian struck, burns, and drowning.
Children’s Trauma and Burn Service team is committed to providing education and training, research, outreach, and injury prevention information to all those who care for children and families. - Departments & Programs - Children's National Medical Center
