The Division of Emergency Medicine at Children's National Medical Center provides a full range of diagnostic services and treatment for acutely-ill or injured patients.
Children’s has one of the largest pediatric emergency departments in the country, treating more than 70,000 patients per year.
The Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center (EMTC) is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and provides pediatric medical control for the region. Emergency care is supervised by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians. All pediatric subspecialists are available for consultation for emergency care.
The EMTC is home to a state-of-the-art Decontamination Unit to meet the needs of children and families in the event of a biological, chemical, or radiological event. The 4,785 sq. ft. multipurpose facility is the only one of its kind in the region.
Community emergency and primary care providers can access Children’s emergency physicians and refer patients 24 hours a day through our Emergency Communication and Information Center (ECIC) by calling Children's Lifeline at 800-884-5433 or 202-476-5433. The ECIC can also arrange for rapid air or ground transport. The Division of Transport Medicine provides specially trained staff to arrive at the referring hospital or office to transport patients to Children’s.
The Fast Track Center (urgent care) provides services for minor acute illnesses and injuries. The Fast Track Center serves nearly 25,000 children each year. Staffed with pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners, the hours of operation are 8 am – 3 am.
The Evaluation and Treatment Unit provides care to those patients who require up to 24 hours of treatment, but do not require a hospital admission.
The division’s faculty members are national leaders in several areas, including research, quality improvement, and education.
