Pulmonary Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine offers consultation, treatment, and diagnostic testing for all pediatric pulmonary diseases, including but not limited to patients with cystic fibrosis, congenital malformations of the lung, recurrent pneumonia, chronic cough, BPD, stridor, chest wall disorders, and neuromuscular disease. Our staff of board-certified attending pediatric pulmonologists, pulmonary fellows, pediatric pulmonary nursing staff, and pediatric respiratory care practitioners are knowledgeable in the care of pediatric respiratory disorders and are dedicated advocates for children and families.

A diagnostic pulmonary laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment provides pulmonary function testing for patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic fiberoptic laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy also are available. Flexible bronchoscopes are used to assess the patency of the upper and lower respiratory tract in infants, children and adolescents. In addition to assessing the respiratory tract for anatomic abnormalities, broncho-alveolar lavage is performed to aid in the diagnosis of unusual pulmonary infections and to assess for conditions such as pulmonary hemosiderosis and chronic aspiration.

Sleep services are provided through the Pediatric Sleep Medicine Program and Sleep Lab. - Departments & Programs - Children's National Medical Center
