Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Children’s National Medical Center is the largest pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation provider in the Mid-Atlantic region. We offer both inpatient and outpatient care.
Through this Division, Children’s provides state-of-the art diagnostic evaluations and comprehensive rehabilitation to infants, children, and youth with physical disabilities. The goal of pediatric rehabilitation is to help the reach the highest level of physical, cognitive, and social functioning possible.
The Division serves as the regional pediatric rehabilitation referral center for the greater Washington region and provides a full compliment of inpatient, outpatient, and consultative services reaching across five institutions and three states. Conditions treated in pediatric rehabilitation settings include:

Cerebral palsy
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injuries
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Birth related injuries such as brachial plexus palsy
- Neuromuscular disorders, including the region’s Muscular Dystrophy Association clinic for children
- Motor Dysfunction
- Congenital birth defects such as torticollis
The Division provides care to the region’s most medically complex infants, children and youth. In order to better serve the needs of these patients and their families, the Division offers a variety of specialized multidisciplinary programs. These programs provide comprehensive, culturally competent, family-centered assessment, evaluation and care. Led by pediatric rehabilitation specialists, called physiatrists, the multidisciplinary team offers:

- Rehabilitation Nursing

Under the guidance of the pediatric physiatrist, the multidisciplinary team works together with patients and their families to develop a plan of treatment that is responsive to their unique needs and strengths. Our clinics make it possible for patients and families to meet with the entire team on one day, streamlining their experience and minimizing the emotional, physical and financial stresses for both the child and their family.

- Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, the official Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) affiliated clinic for children and youth in the Washington region

The Division is home to the largest and most specialized rehabilitation therapy program for children in the mid-Atlantic region. Our pediatric trained physical and occupational therapists provide a full-range of both acute inpatient therapy as well as offering comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation therapy services at Children’s Hospital and each of the outpatient centers located throughout the region. Many of the therapists, who call the Division home, are highly specialized in pediatric rehabilitation modalities, including:

- Standardized testing and assessment for children with perceptual motor and learning disabilities

Acute inpatient rehabilitation is offered through partnerships with collegial hospitals. The National Center for Children’s Rehabilitation is located at the National Rehabilitation Hospital at 106 Irving Street, NW, Washington, DC. Through that partnership, we offer inpatient rehabilitation services for children ages 6-18.
HSC Pediatric Center (formerly the Hospital for Sick Children) is another partner located at Bunker Hill Road, NE, Washington. Through that collaboration, we offer acute and subacute rehabilitation.

Appointments for the regional outpatient centers and Children’s National Medical Center can be scheduled by calling the number above Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. During busy periods, all lines may be busy and you may be asked to leave a message and your call will be returned within 48 hours. There may be a waiting time for an appointment, depending on the location of the clinic. Please make every effort to schedule follow-up appointments in a timely manner; we suggest scheduling your follow-up appointment at the time of your clinic visit. Currently, our physicians have appointments at Main Hospital, Children's Oupatient Center of Montgomery County, and Children's Oupatient Center of Northern Virgina. Our therapists are available to see patients at the Main Hospital, Children's Oupatient Center of Montgomery County ,Children's Oupatient Center of Northern Virgina and Children's Outpatient Center in Upper Marlboro.
- We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment to register at our reception desk. If you are 15-30 minutes late for your appointment, you may need to reschedule your appointment; the doctor may try to fit your child’s appointment into the day’s schedule if you are willing to wait. If you are more than 30 minutes late, your appointment will probably need to be rescheduled.
