Laboratory Medicine
The Division of Laboratory Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center provides unique laboratory services to patients at the hospital, regional outpatient centers, and mobile health clinics. In Addition, the Laboratory Medicine physicians provide specialized reference laboratory services for investigators and laboratories in the United States and abroad.
Using state-of-the-art technologies, the Laboratory Medicine team performs more than 900,000 tests annually to assist physicians in confirming a diagnosis or in monitoring the effectiveness of a patient’s treatment.
Laboratory Medicine’s The Blood Donor Center collects approximately 2,800 whole blood donations and 750 apheresis platelet donations each year. The red blood cells, plasma, and platelets from these donations provide some of the products for the greater than 13,000 transfusions performed annually on over 2,700 patients.
The Laboratory Medicine specialist are skilled at drawing blood from pediatric and special needs patients. Our phlebotomy team strive to make patients as comfortable as possible by allowing parents or guardians to stay in the room and encouraging them to hold, hug, and comfort their children throughout the procedure.
Whenever possible, Children’s physicians prefer to use our laboratory services. Sometimes insurance prohibits this. Children’s is a Quest and LabCorp collection site. The physicians and/or nursing team will contact the family to review and discuss the test results.
Laboratory Medicine physicians and directors are available for physician consultation, and assistance in interpreting test results, and providing advice on additional specialized tests and laboratory procedures.
The Division of Laboratory Medicine is a part of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
