Neurology
The Neurology Division at Children’s National Medical Center is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. It is staffed by 26 neurologists, many of them nationally and internationally renowned. This staff leads national and international research projects, and brings that expertise to the care of patients and families.
Each year, more than 23,000 pediatric patients benefit from the Neurology division’s multidisciplinary care.
Inpatient care addresses a variety of conditions that require hospitalization, including trauma, tumors, epilepsy and inflammation such as meningitis. Each year, about 2,500 patients are seen through the Inpatient Consult Program
Outpatient care (evaluations, assessments and a full range of treatments) is accessible to patients and families across the region through our outpatient clinics available at the hospital; our Maryland facilities in Rockville, Laurel Lakes and Annapolis; as well as our Virginia facilities in Fairfax.
Children’s also serves patients and families throughout the region by coordinating inpatient and outpatient clinical neurologic care for several area hospitals, including INOVA Fairfax Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital.
The Neurology Division brings considerable expertise to bear in the treatment of leading pediatric neurology conditions, including:
The division focuses on translational research and offers patients in the region access to a number of clinical trials with an emphasis on innovative biologic-based therapy. The division collaborates with multiple laboratories investigating the neurobiologic basis of childhood neurologic illness including those in:
It leads national and international clinical trials consortia, which gives its patients access to the newest therapies. Among the consortia it leads or in which it participates are:
- Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium
- Epilepsy Medication Trials
- Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trial Consortium
- CINRG network for treatment of muscular dystrophy
- Childhood Stroke Networks
Research laboratories aligned with the division are focused on determining the molecular underpinnings of childhood neurologic diseases. The division also works closely with multiple branches of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to jointly investigate and treat childhood neurologic diseases.
In addition to its team of close to 30 neurologists, the division works collaboratively with colleagues in related divisions throughout Children’s National Medical Center for a fully-integrated approach to care.
For example, the multidisciplinary Epilepsy Program evaluates innovative drugs and offers the finest in neuro-monitoring and neurosurgical treatment of epilepsy, including Vagus Nerve Stimulation, surgical focus resection and corpus colostomy.
