Developmental Pediatrics
The Division of Developmental Pediatrics at Children’s National Medical Center is a resource and referral center for children with developmental needs and their families. Four full-time neurodevelopmental pediatricians assess and diagnose developmental disorders in children from birth through age 21. We coordinate comprehensive services and make referrals to various specialty departments within Children’s or with professionals in the region.
The developmental specialists at Children’s strive to educate parents and families about their child’s condition. The team assesses all areas of a child’s development to ensure an accurate diagnosis, including gross fine motor skills, speech and language abilities, and social skills. Then the team works with the child and his/her family to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
That comprehensive plan is usually more than a plan of action for in-home care. It also includes recommendations for working with the school system and the child’s teachers. Additionally, it may include referrals to community resources and to other specialties at Children’s.
Children with developmental delays or disorders may be referred to other teams at Children’s that offer an interdisciplinary approach to care. Among them:
