The Division of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center provides comprehensive clinical anesthesia services for infants and children undergoing a full range of pediatric surgical procedures.
Children’s is the only institution in the area that guarantees anesthesia administered by a fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologist.
A complete spectrum of surgical anesthesia services are provided, including anesthesia for pediatric congenital heart disease, heart transplantation, craniofacial reconstruction, neurosurgery, reconstruction of the larynx and trachea, and complex pediatric surgery.
Regional anesthesia and patient-controlled analgesia are available as well, and the team will consult on malignant hyperthermia, pulmonary insufficiency and pain management. Pre-operative consultation from referring physicians is welcomed and encouraged. Pre-anesthesia preparation of the child and parents is stressed.
Anesthesia Pain Service
Children's also provides the Anesthesia Pain Service as a consult for post-operative pain. The service is comprised of two nurses and directed by one physician, providing consultation for patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), epidural anesthesia and other pain-related problems. These problems do not necessarily have to be surgery related, and can include conditions such as sickle cell disease.
Sedation/Anesthesia for Procedures Outside of the Operating Room
The Division of Anesthesiology also offers anesthesia and analgesia for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. The staff works closely with the Division of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology and offers anesthesia to patients needing MRI to provide maximum comfort during the procedure. Children's also offer anesthesia to patients being treated by the Hematology and Oncology teams who come to Children’s for procedures such as bone marrow aspiration.
