Ophthalmology
The Division of Ophthalmology at Children’s National Medical Center specializes in the treatment of complex pediatric eye problems. The oldest department of its kind in the nation, the division is dedicated to providing the full scope of eye care services to children from infancy through adolescence.
The Division of Ophthalmology specializes in the treatment of complex pediatric eye problems. For patients found to have a less severe eye condition, Children’s team helps connect families with a community specialist for a more appropriate level of care.
The division provides comprehensive ophthalmologic evaluations for children including,
- an initial eye examination to determine the cause of poor vision
- appraisal of misalignment of the eyes in children and adults (strabismus)
- screening for ocular pathology associated with systemic diseases
- assessment of ophthalmic problems that may be related to learning difficulties
Children's Ophthalmology team has the advanced training to deal with the eye problems of children, which differ from those of adults. Some conditions, such as amblyopia, develop only in children. Others, such as crossing of the eyes and other ocular misalignments (strabismus), are more common in children than in adults. Eye diseases, such as cataracts and glaucoma present differently in children than in adults: their pathophysiology, management and prognosis are different. To diagnose and treat these conditions and others with success, children often need the unique skills of pediatric ophthalmologists.
Special services include contact lens fitting, electroretinography (ERG), fundus photography and fluorescein angiography, A-scan biometry, B-scan ultrasonography, keratometry, pachymetry, preferential looking (Teller) visual acuity assessment, visual field perimetry and ocular coherence tomography (OCT).
Children’s is committed to recognizing and treating childhood eye conditions early, in order to preserve the quality of life of our patients. This tradition of excellence has made Children’s Ophthalmology division a leader in academic medicine, both locally and nationwide.
